Wire mesh decking is used on pallet rack to create a shelf. It allows for both pallet and hand-stacked storage. It can also be used for bulk shelving. A wire deck is constructed of wire mesh with channel supports welded to the bottom that give it support. The wire mesh typically waterfalls over the front and back of the pallet rack beams preventing spread. After it is manufactured the deck receives a durable and attractive electro-galvanized after weld finish.

The new wave of e-commerce sales and direct shipment from warehouses (known as the Amazon effect) requires lots of pallet storage in racks and hand picking and packing. Some say that the pandemic of 2020 led a great many consumers to purchase product online. This new model of business has lead to the growth of 3PL’s (third party logistics companies) and certainly breathed new life into pallet rack, shelving and wire decking sales in particular.
E-commerce and order picking in general has really popularized the “inside waterfall wire deck”. Our inside waterfall decking sets down into the step of the beam and doesn’t waterfall over the front face of the beam. This allows for the beam or shelf facing to be clear for labels and stickers that identify SKU stored in bin location. Keep in mind that we recommend inside waterfall decks be tek screwed into the beam to prevent them from dropping out.
Our most popular wire deck is the standard “wire decking with step style channel supports” that are designed to set down into a standard 1-5/8″ step beam. Our second most popular wire deck is the “wire deck with flared or smashed channel supports” that offer universal fit in 1-5/8″ step beams, box beams, structural c-channel beams, almost any beams. The advantage of our flared wire decks over other manufacturers is that we add 2 humps in our flared channel that give it extra strength and support.
We also offer specialty wire decks like the “wire deck with inverted channel” for the pharmaceutical and food industries. The channels that are welded to the bottom of the deck are inverted so the U shaped channel is facing downward. This prevents food and dust particles from building up in the channels and contaminating products.
I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you about the most popular accessory for wire mesh decking and that is the “Snap in wire dividers” or “hanging wire dividers”. Snap in dividers are a stock item that simply snaps onto our wire decking and creates modules for storing and organizing your products. The hanging wire divider is more rigid but must be custom manufactured with a longer lead time.
WIRE MESH DECKING ADVANTAGES INCLUDE:
- Allows for both pallet and hand-stacked storage.
- Safely supports pallets while stored in rack. Can safely carry misplaced pallets giving forklift driver more time to reposition.
- Helps prevents products and boxed from falling-through to the floor.
- Can be used in both pallet rack and shelving.
- Complies with all fire codes.
TIP FROM THE PROS: If you are storing full pallet load quantities, your pallets are stretch wrapped and you are not hand picking boxes from the pallets you may want to consider “Pallet Supports” in place of wire decks. This could really save you some money.
