Cantilever rack styles are specific structural designs and material builds available for open-front storage systems. Rather than utilizing a one-size-fits-all framework, these racks are categorized into distinct styles based on how they are manufactured and how they occupy floor space. The primary styles include structural steel, roll-formed steel, single-sided, and double-sided configurations. Selecting the right style allows an operation to match its racking precisely to its load weights, spatial limitations, and material handling methods.
Structural I-beam cantilever racks are built from heavy-duty, hot-rolled structural steel components that are bolted together. This style is defined by its massive weight capacity and extreme durability, making it the premier choice for the harshest industrial settings and outdoor storage yards. The primary advantage of structural I-beam racking is its resistance to forklift impact and its ability to support the heaviest high-density materials, such as solid steel bar stock, heavy machinery components, and large lumber packs.
Roll-formed cantilever racks are constructed from cold-rolled sheet steel that is shaped into lightweight, interlocking components. This style is good for light- to intermediate-duty applications, such as storing PVC conduit, carpet rolls, or lighter building materials. The main advantages of roll-formed styles are cost-effectiveness and easy installation. They typically cost less than structural steel options while still providing the open-front horizontal access necessary for long inventory.
Single-sided and double-sided variations determine how the rack styles are arranged within a facility’s layout. Single-sided racks feature a flat back design, allowing them to be anchored directly against walls to turn unused perimeter areas into productive storage space. Double-sided racks utilize a central column with arms extending from both sides, which is good for creating center aisles. The advantage of the double-sided style is that it maximizes storage density and floor space efficiency by allowing forklifts to access two complete rows of inventory from a single aisle.
