Question: How does galvanized pallet get it’s galvanized finish? 1. Hot dipped galvanized pallet rack is manufactured with galvanized steel. 2. Hot dipped galvanized finish is sprayed on. 3. Galvanized pallet rack is just pallet rack that has been dipped in vat of hot galvanizing. If you answered number 3 you are correct!
Our pallet racking is sent to an outside vendor who are experts at apply a hot dipped galvanizing finish for rust resistance. They dip our pallet rack in huge vats of hot galvanized finish. This feature adds to the lead time and cost considerably. This type of pallet rack with hot dipped galvanized finish is primarily used for outdoor storage racks, coolers, and wash down areas, for it will not rust.
If you have a wet, damp area that needs pallet rack you have two options. Use standard pallet rack with powder coat paint finish and expect it to rust and need replacing in years OR buy hot dipped galvanized industrial shelving and be done with it. Many food distributors are not allowed to have anything but galvanized finish in coolers and wash down areas when storing food.
The question comes when you operate a lumber yard, building supply company or big box retailer that has outdoor storage. The question is can I get by with pallet rack that is just powder coat paint finish or must I spend the money for HD GALV? In may cases powder coat paint finish will do just fine. We have many customers who use standard pallet rack with it’s powder coat paint finish because of it’s low cost and just understand that they will have to replace it coming years. I guess it also depends on your typical weather conditions. You can be sure that powder coat paint finish will fade in the sunlight and eventually rust when stored outdoors.
Galvanized pallet racks can increase the safety of your operation. Because they’re rust-resistant, you decrease the risk of rack failure due to wear and tear. It’s an important feature to think about when you’re trying to decide if you should invest in galvanized pallet rack up front.
