QUESTION: What grade of stainless steel would you like us to quote, 304 or 316? Type 304 is the more economical and commonly used stainless steel and provides good corrosion resistance for most indoor and general-purpose applications. Type 316 contains molybdenum, which provides superior resistance to corrosion, pitting, salt and many chemicals, making it a better choice for outdoor, coastal, washdown and other harsh environments. The appearance of either grade depends primarily on the specified surface finish—304 and 316 can both be supplied with a standard mill finish or a brighter polished finish. In more corrosive environments, 304 may develop surface staining or pitting over time, while 316 generally provides better long-term corrosion resistance. Type 316 is significantly more expensive; depending on the product and market conditions, our cost may be approximately 50% higher.
