Let’s get to the nuts and bolts of structural steel pallet rack. The two biggest advantages of a structural steel pallet rack over roll formed pallet rack is damage resistance and higher capacity. If you were to hit an upright frame with a forklift you will find that structural steel uprights will withstand the impact better than teardrop roll formed uprights.

Now keep in mind, no upright frame, structural or roll formed will withstand the full on impact of a forklift. BUT incidental bumps from a forklift which can be disastrous to a roll formed upright column will often times not cause any damage to a structural upright. This is due to the thicker cross sections of structural members. A structural steel pallet rack does a better job of resisting minor forklift impact.

Structural steel pallet racking has other advantages too. The bolt on connection makes it easier to move beams around. The bolts drop easily into the holes and beams just slide out for easy installation or re-adjustment of beams. This reduces the amount of time it takes to install or disassemble structural pallet rack which can reduce overall installation cost.

Finally the major advantage to structural pallet rack is that is has higher capacity than roll formed pallet rack which allows you to safely store heavier loads. Structural rack has a lot more capacity which gives you more flexibility to store a variety of different loads in your pallet rack with the confidence in knowing that the rack can withstand the weight.

The combination of heavy loads, multiple storage levels and the potential of impact from lifting equipment can create dangerous, if not devastating consequences. To be more specific, picking the wrong pallet rack can cause rack failure. That is why it is important to consider using heavy duty structural steel pallet rack systems when storing heavy loads at high elevations.

Our structural steel pallet rack systems are designed and manufactured in accordance with AISC and RMI standards. Upright frames and beams are constructed of structural c-channel columns with a minimum of 36,000 PSI.  Structural upright capacities range from 30,000 LBS, 47,000 LBS up to 52,000 LBS capacity per frame at 48″ beam spacing.

Structural load beams are adjustable up and down on 2″ increments. The load beams are secured to the upright with heavy-duty nuts and bolts which cannot be dislodged by fork lift impact. Load beams are offered in a variety of different lengths and capacities ranging from 48″, 72″, 96″, 108″, 120″ up to 144″ long. Capacities are based on uniform distributed loads over a pair of beams. Bolt-on bracing is available as an option and it can be used to increase shelf capacity.

TIP FROM THE PRO’S: May we recommend that you consider integrating roll formed step beams with custom nut & bolt end pieces into your structural steel pallet rack system. By doing this  you get the best of both worlds, you get the durability and damage resistance of heavy duty structural uprights and the cost savings of roll formed beams. It also allows you to use standard pallet supports and wire decking. This custom option would only make sense on larger jobs. It will help reduce overall project cost significantly.
