Let’s say your in the food distribution business and you have forklifts operating daily, no hourly, no by the minute picking pallets out of your pallet rack system and shipping them out the door. They are moving fast in and out of the rack. Chances are you are using a narrow aisle stand up reach truck (probably a Raymond) with outriggers. Let me guess, the outriggers are tearing up and destroying the front columns of your pallet rack uprights. Well there’s a solution.
Cant leg upright storage racks move the front post out of harms way. The front column of the pallet rack upright can be offset in a cantilevered (hence the name Cant Leg) or sloped back so that front column sets back and cannot be hit by the outriggers of a stand up reach truck. The front column on these upright storage racks can’t be hit and damaged if it’s not in harms way. That is where our 90 degree offset column comes into play.
When using a stand up reach truck with outriggers you really have two options for reducing damage to the front columns of your pallet racks system:
1. If using straight leg upright frames you will need to use a 102″ beam instead of a 96″ beam. That will move the columns further apart and give the outriggers more space to operate. The down side to this option is that you will lose 6″ of storage space on every bay which will ultimately lose you pallet positions stored. In combination with the 102″ beam we also suggest using our 4″ high V-Nose Post Protectors on every column to help prevent damage.
2. The second option is to use Cant Leg Uprights or Slope Back Uprights. These uprights allow you to use a 96″ beam which will save you space and allow you to operate safely in a narrow bay while giving your stand up reach trucks with outriggers room to operate. The down side is that a cant leg (AKA offset leg) upright is more expensive then an upright with a straight post.
Lastly, and most importantly (Always save the most important things for last – NOT) is that Cant Leg uprights must only be used in back to back rows where they have proper stability. Cant leg or slope leg uprights CANNOT be used in a single row along a wall. The slanted back upright racking post is not stable enough to be used in a single row as it may fall over when fully loaded. It can only be used when tied with row spacers with another upright in a back-to-back row.
TIP FROM THE PRO: The least expensive offset is 8″ up and 8″ back – this allows the outriggers to pass the plain of the column.
