Understanding the specific needs and the products you’ll be storing will guide the selection of the most appropriate pallet rack system. In many cases, a combination of different systems will make the most sense in creating a balanced storage solution within your warehouse.

The choice between selective pallet rack, drive-in pallet rack, pushback pallet rack, or pallet flow rack depends on several factors specific to your warehouse operations and storage needs. Selective pallet rack works well for warehouses with high product turnover and a wide range of SKUs. It offers easy access to each pallet. Drive-in pallet rack maximizes storage density by allowing forklifts to drive directly into the rack, making it more useful for bulk storage of similar products with few SKUs. Pushback pallet rack offers higher selectivity than drive-in rack while still maximizing storage density, making it better for warehouses with multiple SKUs and moderate product turnover. Pallet flow rack is best for warehouses with high-density storage requirements and FIFO (first in, first out) inventory management. It allows pallets to flow forward on inclined rollers for easy access and rotation.

Consider factors such as the volume and variety of products you need to store, the frequency of inventory turnover, the space available in your warehouse, and your preferred inventory management method (e.g., FIFO or LIFO). Also, assess your material handling equipment capabilities, such as the type of forklifts used and their maneuverability within the rack system.

Evaluate each rack system’s advantages and limitations in relation to your specific warehouse operations and storage goals. Consider consulting with a warehouse layout and design expert from Warehouse Rack & Shelf LLC to determine the most suitable rack system for your facility’s requirements.
