Bar Grating is our heaviest duty pallet rack decking! This metal grate decking is ideal for storing heavy molds, dies and point loads placed in the middle of the shelf. Open design allows air, light and water from sprinkler systems to penetrate which may prevent you from having to sprinkler every level. In many cases it meets the Fire Marshall’s requirements!
We have frequently been asked to replaced bent and damaged wire decking with heavy duty bar grate decking by customers storing concentrated loads. It is ideal for point load applications such as when storing steel and wire containers with feet that come down on a 3″ x 3″ or 4″ x 4″ footprint. Bar grate pallet rack decking is heavier duty than wire decking and also more expensive.
We supply the old traditional “bar grate decking” with heavy duty bearing bars and we also sell the new MBG carbon steel Press-Lock pallet rack decking. Both products are very good but there are some major differences you should know about. Traditional bar grate is much heavier and expensive. It is similar to what you see used in mezzanine flooring.
The revolutionary Press-Lock bar grate utilizes Steel Press Lock Grating with a mesh opening of 1-5/16″ x 7/8″ Centers. Band Type A (Deck with Angle Collar on Step Beam) 4500 lbs. Traditional 19-W4 Heavy duty bar grate decking has crossbars Electronically Weldforged into bearing bars that give our bar grate the utmost in strength and durability. Steel and aluminum metal grate grating is available in both plain and abrasive “serrated” surfaces. It is ideal for catwalks and mezzanines.
Bar grating styles include Heavy-Weld steel grating for heavy rolling or static loads, aluminum I-Bar or rectangular mill finished grating, Aluminum extruded plank flooring either punched or un-punched, Serrated diamond-shaped metal Deckspan, United interlock flooring and expanded metal grating.
We are able to supply your company the bar grate or we can integrate it into a pallet rack system to create heavy duty pallet rack decking, multi-level catwalk pick module or mezzanine. Bar grating is the most heavy duty pallet rack decking that we offer. Its open style meets Fire Marshall’s requirements. Heavy duty steel grating is ideal for storing heavy molds and dies that have oils. The open design allows for oils to drip through.
Bar grating is also used when customer is storing heavy items or containers with feet. The metal grate decking can be designed to support point loading applications. Bar grating is one of the safest decking options available. It sets down into the standard 1-5/8 step of a pallet rack step beam and sets flush with top of beam.
Our bar grate decking can either set down into the step beam or for structural c-channel beams can be designed to set on top of the beams. We can even design decking to have a universal fit that works with BOTH roll formed beams and structural beams. Keep in mind that you lose 1-1/2″ to 1-3/4″ storage height when decking sets on top of beam. We can design decking to have a collar that waterfalls over front and back of beam (which prevents spreading) and sets down below crown of beam for both roll form and structural beams to save you that extra clearance. Advantages of Press Lock Bar Grate Pallet Rack Decking Over Traditional 19-W4 Bar Grate Decking:
- • More Economical – Presslock decking is lighter per square foot and therefore less expensive per unit than 19-W4 Bar Grate decking.
• More flexibility in in bar spacing.
• 19W4 is overkill in many pallet rack decking applications.

SPECIAL NOTES: Point loading is dangerous. Please tell us the smallest heaviest load you will be storing on the bar grate decking. Example: 750 LBS on 4” x 4” point. If load is palletized, please tell us size of pallets, number of bottom boards or stringers on bottom of pallet, size of bottom boards or stingers on bottom of pallet, spacing of bottom boards or stringers on bottom of pallet (see attached specification sheet). If you can provide photo of the bottom of your pallets that would be helpful.
